REPRIEVE UNLIKELY
Indian Told To Leave (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 1. The Minister of Immigration (Mr Shand) yesterday held out no hope of a reprieve for Mr Kanjeet Singh, an 18-year-old Fijian Indian now living at Urenui, who has been ordered by the immigration authorities to leave New Zealand. Mr Singh came to New Zealand on a three-month temporary entry permit last January. Since then, his brother, Mr Mangal Singh—who is married to a New Zealand girl—has tried to have the permit extended. Mr Shand said he could not see any possibility of Renjeet being allowed to stay. “Before this young man was allowed to come here, he signed an undertaking to leave as soon as his temporary permit expired,” Mr Shand said.
“The plain fact is that anybody who applies for a temporary permit is debarred from receiving any consideration for a longer stay.”
Mr Shand said he wanted to make it quite clear that this was far from being an isolated case. “I would think that at least 1000 Fijian Indians attempt to overstay their time in New Zealand each year,” he said. “The situation is such that it is a whole-time job for our officers chasing them out.”
