FAIR TIGER SCORES IN ALISON CUP

"Th« Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND, November 1. Fair Tiger, a Rotorua four-year-old, which the Victorian handicappers gave 8-2 and 8-1 in the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups this spring, was a handsome winner in the £2500 Alison Cup at Ellerslie today with 7-4.

At the declaration of weights for Melbourne, Fair Tiger had just cleared the hack class and the Alison Cup was his third race in open company.

It was his second attempt at a middle distance handicap. The first was when he finished second over a mile and a quarter and 180 yards on his home track last May. In between times, after having a spell through the winter, he came fifth in a sprint at Tauranga just a fortnight or so back.

The Alison Cup was a mile and three furlongs, which Fair Tiger ran out too solidly for the runner-up, Mantovani, from which he received 271 b. Mr Dickens, another of the light-weights, came third and Arakhan was fourth. Fair Tiger was ninth out of 20 for the first seven furlongs and a couple of placings better on the bend into the straight. By the time they approached the last furlong he was right on the heels of the pacemaker, Damian’s Pride, and the next moment he was clear in front and already the winner.

A tall chestnut gelding by Fairs Fair from Dolly Gold, Fair Tiger has looked good since last autumn. There is

no saying how much further he will improve. It seems certain that if he trains on he will take more of the big staying prizes this season. FAIR TIGER'S RECORD Fair Tiger raced twice toward the end of his two-year-old season for a fourth. Last season he had 13 starts for five firsts, four seconds, a third and a fourth. His stake winnings altogether are £3535. Fair Tiger is raced by his breeder, Mrs W. J. Costello, and trained by R. J. Bain, a former South Islander, who took over the training of Mr and Mrs Costello’s horses about two and a half years ago. From the same stable and in Mrs Costello's colours Kangaroo Town about two hours later in the afternoon took the £l2OO Ponui Handicap. Fair Tiger was the seventh favourite each way for the Alison Cup and he paid £l2 17s 6d and £4 2s 6d. The T.A.B. double, Fair Tiger and Pipe Dream (Cheltenham Handicap), returned £225 16s. LED ALL THE WAY Pipe Dream, from C. M. JilIlngs’ stable, ied all the way in the Cheltenham Handicap. His blistering pace taking him clear in front and producing a winning gallop of 1:10 4-5. When he started the season over six furlongs at Ellerslie on October 10 Pipe Dream finished last and in two attempts at Ellerslie and Pukekohe last autumn he finished last and second to last. A winter spell improved him and he is now looking very well. For all his spectacular galloping at Takanini during the week Pipe Dream was the eighth favourite each way for the Cheltenham Handicap, returning £l3 13s end £4 7s on the win and place.

The weather was fine, but cold and blustery. The attendance was 14,404 against 13,666 last year. On-course Investments came to £163,660 (including £39,120 10s on doubles) against £167,034.
