CHILD TOOK DRUGS
Police Break Into Shop (N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, November 1. The police had to break into a chemist’s shop on Saturday afternoon to get details of a prescription to save the life of a two-year-old girl who had swallowed sleeping tablets and was unconscious. The child’s mother had found the girl drowsy with a near-empty bottle by her. The mother did not know how many tablets the child had swallowed and threw away those still in the bottle. Then she carried the child and the empty bottle to hospital. There the staff tried to get in touch with the chemist whose name was on the label to learn the nature of the drug, but were unable to locate him.
The police finally broke into the shop and with another chemist found the nature of the drug. By now the girl was deeply unconscious. With the drug identified, remedial measures were taken. The girl promptly responded and is now out of danger.
