CHILDREN’S CAMPS
Water Safety Hints The National Water Safety Committee proposed to help organisations holding children’s camps by supplying the organisers with hints on water safety, said Mr S. V. Higgins, national secretary, recently. “The suggestions will also be of great benefit to anyone who looks after large groups of children at the beach or river,” said Mr Higgins. The committee made these main points:— Have a qualified life-saver and swimming instructor available to supervise swimming parties. At the beginning of each camp, lay down and explain specific safety rules for boating and swimming. Ensure life-saving equipment is readily available at all times; it should include lines for throwing from the shore to a person in distress. Rope off danger areas in rivers or beaches near the camp. Ensure boats are continually under the strict supervision of a responsible person, and that they are safely drawn up on the bank When not in use, not merely left afloat.
Keep a rigid check on children bathing, by using the “buddy” system. Children are paired off and each child assumes the responsibility of looking out for his “buddy” raising the alarm at once if he appears to be in difficulties. The supervisor makes occasional spot checks by calling “Buddies together!”, at which the paired children stand up together.
