WHITEBAIT STREAM
Big Catches Reported (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, October 21. Whitebait has been streaming up some sections of the Buller river this week in numbers comparable with the old-time runs. From a small area near the signal station two persons took about 4001 b in two days. Others caught up to 801 b. The whitebait seemed to hit in at one patch and others fishing close to the more fortunate ones were unable to get. very close to the fish, although there were many useful catches. One woman netted such a large shoal, close to 301 b, that she had to seek assistance to get the “pudding” clear of the water. There have been some good catches on the place further upstream, known as The Point. One man took 801 b on at least four occasions. The whitebait have shied off other stretches of the river, from which good returns were made in other years, notably that behind the native domain. Catches from the Orowaiti river have not been good this season but quite a lot of whitebait have come from the Karamea and Mokihinui rivers. Of all earthly music that which reaches farthest into heaven is the beating of a truly loving heart.—Henry Ward Beecher.
