China’s Bomb
Sir, —It is unfortunate that the Chinese found it necessary to explode their atom bomb, but they were being exposed to ruthless American nuclear blackmail, and perhaps now the bluff of the United States in Asia can be called. Meanwhile, the testing of underground bombs proceeds apace in the United States, and underground testing can pollute the atmosphere almost as much as testing in the atmosphere. Reliable news sources state that the United States has tested 14 underground devices this year, and 24 since the signing of the test ban. The main reason why the Chinese exploded their bomb was to Drove that no single nation has the prerogative of technological ability.—Yours, etc., P.J.A. October 21, 1964.
