Gorse Control

Sir, —As I have been travelling round Banks Peninsula quite a bit lately, I have been struck by the stupid policy of the Banks Peninsula Weeds Committee in concentrating on the fringes of block gorse. There are millions of single plants all over the peninsula every year, each one on otherwise clear ground. Each of these plants must be producing millions of seed which will strike and spread any time during the next 50 years. —Yours etc., BROKEN-DOWN COCKY. October 12, 1964. [The chairman of the Banks Peninsula Noxious Weeds Committee (Mr W. C. Miller) replies: “If the correspondent was a little more specific I could perhaps give him better information. We do not control the hills until he reaches Gebbies valley. It has been this committee’s policy since inception to concentrate on all scattered gorse and roadsides as number one priority. Only last week a decision was made to tighten up on the remaining offenders in our area.”]
