No Records Broken At Christ’s College Sports

Persistent drizzle and a soft track reduced record-breaking efforts to a minimum when the Christ’s College athletic sports were held on Satur-

day. No records were broken but the record of 11-9 seconds for the 80 yards junior hurdles, set in 1960 by R. A. Robinson, was equalled by D. B. M. Watson. However, two new records were created when S. Cowles ran the under-14 440 yards in 60.6 sec and D. W. Tocker won the open 220 yards hurdles in 28.0 sec. Both of these performances beat the previous best performance and will now become records. Perhaps the most Impressive performance of the sports was the running of B. McMaster in the open 880 yards. Notwithstanding the wet track McMaster ran the distance in 2:2.7, only Msec outside the record of 2:1.3 held by P. J. H. Hewlett. Another good performance was that of J. A. T. Dawson In the open shot put. Although this event was held in heavy rain which made it difficult to gain a good foothold and made the shot slippery. Dawson was only Ift Sin behind the record of 46:41 set by J. G. Hawkes in 1951. The open 440 yards hurdles was certainly one of the most spectacular events. At the first hurdle three competitors hit hurdles and at the next lot again there were mishaps as runners mistimed their approaches and slipped on the wet grass. However, H. T. Young, a very stylish runner, had a faultless round and won easily. The senior championship was a close fight between Young and M. F. Poulsen. Young had to beat Poulsen in the last event, the 100 yards hurdles, to win the title and this he did convincingly. The junior championship was won by D. G. Rawson, D. B. M. Watson being runner-up and D. J. Murchison won the intermediate championship from E. J. C. Harkness. Results were:— Open 220 Yards (record 22.8, D. W. MacKenzie, 1959).—M. F. Poulsen 1, H. T.
