Struck Head On Rock

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 18. A man was killed and a woman received minor injuries when the car in which they were travelling ran off the Island Bay esplanade and on to the beach at 2 a.m. today. The dead man was James William Lean, aged 20, a soldier, of Hastings. With him was Miss Norma Alice Edwards, aged 22, a student nurse, who was treated and discharged at Wellington Hospital. The accident occurred when the car failed to negotiate a corner and jumped 30 feet into the air, striking a small rowing boat and landing on the beach. Mr Lean was thrown from the car and struck his head on a rock.
