Grain And Seeds POTATO SUPPLY
No Surplus Of No. 1 Grade
Although inter-island trade has slackened considerably in the last two weeks, some quantities of South Island potatoes are finding their way north and a significant surplus of No. 1 grade potatoes is not expected this season. Latest prices on the Auckland wholesale markets indicate that South Island potatoes are bringing between £36 and £4l 10s a ton.
The Pukekohe crop is reported to be considerably lighter than last year and because of this it is not known exactly how much longer the demand for South Island potatoes will continue. Small Seeds A slight increase in inquiries for small seeds has been noticed recently, but the United Kingdom interest has been definitely limited. As a result, any firming in small seeds prices is reflected in only a few pence variation from recent quotes. The Northern Hemisphere is known to be well supplied with grass seed, particularly perennial and Italian ryegrasses, which will prevent any steep price rise here. A range of prices issued as a guide to growers is:— Ryegrass.—Mother perennial, 16s 6d a bushel; p.p., 15s 6d; mother Hl, 18s; mother Italian, 18s (nominal).
White Clover.—Mother, 2s 8d per lb; p.p., 2s 7d. Cowgrass.—Mother, 3s 3d per lb; uncertified, 3s. Montgomery Red Clover.— Mother, 3s 3d per lb; uncertified, 2s 9d.
Marlborough Lucerne.—Mother, 4s Sd per lb; uncertified, 3s fid.
Cocksfoot. Mother grass* lands, 3s fid per lb; uncertified, 2s 3d.
It was emphasised that values quoted for ryegrass and white clover were based on a 99/90 purity and germination and free from Rumex species to comply with the United Kingdom Seeds Act.
