LANGFORD HOUSE

New Wing In Ise The new brick wing of Langford House, one of the homes of the Aged People’s Welfare Council, is now in use.

Built in memory of Dr. Catherine Newman, an Opawa doctor who was murdered in 1961, the wing has bedrooms for eight persons and a lounge. Five women and three men are using the wing.

Dr. Newman left £2BOO for the wing, and the Government gave 75 per cent of the funds to build it. Furniture and carpets were given by the Canterbury Masonic Charitable Trust

The extension replaces a building which accommo-

dated six persons and was considered too cold. The Government subsidised the wing on condition that the unsuitable building would not be used for accommodation again. This building will be used for pottery and carpentry instruction and as a storeroom. One half-day a week is given to instruction, and the pottery class has already proved very popular. There was no subsidy for the alteration of this building, nor for the landscaping which has been necessary, last year the Christchurch South Rotary Club raised

£2300 at a fair and gave it to the council, and this money has been used for these purposes.

The new wing has a brick exterior and a wallboard interior, the bedrooms being connected to the rest of the house by the lounge. To raise further funds for langford House a raffle is being organised.. Dr. P. Brass has given a tape-recorder and Mr C. Williams a camera as prizes.
