Sprinter Out, Hurdler In
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) TOKYO, October 18. The New Zealand sprinter, Miss Doreen Porter, finished sixth in her semi-final of the women’s 200 metres today and failed to qualify for the final.
Miss Porter was away well and up with the leaders into the straight, but the pace over the final stages was too strong for her and she dropped back to third from last. Her semi-final was won by Mary Black (Australia) in 23.45ec. Miss Porter’s time was 24sec.
She finished closely behind Dorothy Hyman (Britain), the Perth Commonwealth Games champion, who also failed to win a place in the final.
The other semi-final was won by the brilliant American sprinter, Edith McGuire in 23.35ec. Irena Kirczenstein, of Poland, second in 23.6 and Janet Simpson (Britain), third in 23.7. Miss Porter earlier had qualified for the semi-finals by being one of the four fastest losers in the first round heats with 24.35ec. The New Zealand hurdler, Mrs Avis Mclntosh, ran one
of the best races of her life in finishing third to the Russian, Irina Press, in her heat of the women’s 80 metres hurdles.
Mrs Mclntosh, who had to overcome a leg injury in training in Tokyo, contested the lead all the way and finished only one-tenth of a second behind the Russian girl. Pat Bryce (Britain), who took second place, and Mrs Mclntosh returned the same time of 10.8 sec.
