BOMB FOR INDIA

‘Refuses' To Explode

(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) NEW DELHI, Oct 18. India's Education Minister (Mr M. C. Chagla) said yesterday that India could explode an atom bomb tomorrow if she wished—“but we refuse to do so because our firm policy is that we should not join the nuclear club.”

Speaking to reporters before leaving for a U.N.E.S.C.O. conference in Paris, he said if China ever dared to use the atom bomb against India "it will mean world war, a nuclear holocaust.” Mr Chagla said China’s explosion showed she had no intention of pursuing the path of peace. “We cannot trust the protestations of the Chinese that their atom bombs are for peace.” He said he did not think China’s possession of the atom bomb increased the menace from the Chinese to India, as a threat from China had always been there. India was an advanced country as far as nuclear science was concerned. “We are pledged not to use it for warlike purposes,” said Mr Chagla.
