Farmers’ Concern (From Our Own Reporter/ TIMARU, October 18. In Australia, under the provisions of the Brands Act, sheep were required to be legibly branded with the owner’s registered wool brand immediately after shearing, and the regulations were being enforced with determination, but “where are we going in New Zealand,” asked Mr A. G. O. Johnson at the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury provincial executive of Federated Farmers. “We have had reports of sheep-stealing in South Canterbury and elsewhere in New Zealand and as soon as we reach the position where we cannot brand it will be open slather. We have no efficient means of identification and we should ask the New Zealand Wool . Board and the Department of Agriculture if a satisfactory and acceptable alternative to identification of stock by branding has been found,” he said. A motion to this effect was carried unanimously. 'Mr A. C. Shaw said that prohibition of branding should not be implemented until there was a suitable substitute.
