Lamb Killings To Be Increased This Week
Killing of lambs, which has already begun at works in North and Mid-Canterbury, will be gathering momentum this week.
The general manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Mr R. D. Iles, said that at the company’s Belfast works, where killings have been running at 1200 to 1500 a day, it was expected that they would have built up to between 3000 and 4000 a day by the end of this week and after Labour week-end they were expected to reach 5500 a day, subject to stock coming forward and men being available to man the works.
At Fairfield, where killings began on Thursday, Mr lies said it was expected that the kill would be close to 5600 by next Wednesday, and after Labour week-end it would be gradually increased, again subject to availability of stock and manpower, up to 8000 a day. The company plans to start killing at Pareora next Wednesday, doing about 1500 to 2000 a day for the remainder of the week, and after Labour Day killings will be expanded, as stock becomes available, until a kill of 10,000 a day is attained.
The New Zealand Refrigerating Company was doing a limited kill at Islington last week. It will have one chain operating today and expects to go on to two chains on Tuesday! Killing will also start at the company’s Smithfield works today but a rush is not expected there at this stage. Killing is also under way at the company’s Picton works. One chain will be operating
at Borthwick’s Belfast works today and it is expected that probably two chains will be operating before the end of the week.
