Obituary
MR J. CULLENS Mr James Cullens, who died yesterday at the age of 83, was engineer to the Christchurch Drainage Board for 25 years. He was born in Stirling, Scotland, and after being educated at what is now the Royal Technical College, served an apprenticeship with the Glasgow City Corporation from 1897 to 1901, working as a junior assistant on the Glasgow main drainage scheme. Mr Cullens came to New Zealand after his apprenticeship and for four years up to 1906 worked for the Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board. He then joined the Christchurch Drainage Board for three years before returning to Dunedin. He came back to Christchurch in 1917 as assistantengineer, and was appointed engineer in 1921. He held that position until he retired in 1946. Mr Cullens was a foundation member of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers. He is survived by two sons. R.S.A. Membership Fifty of the 55 new members admitted to the Christchurch Returned Services' Association last evening were men who had returned from service in Malaya. At the end of last month the association had 6651 members, a drop of 276 on the figure of a year ago.
