HUNGER IN SAMOA
Crisis Not Expected (N.Z. Pres* Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 2. Economic and agriculture measures being taken by the Government of Western Samoa would avoid the threat of a hunger crisis within the next decade, the Prime Minister of Western Samoa (Fiame Mata’afa) said in Auckland today. He was commenting on a statement by the national secretary of C.0.R.5.0. (the Rev. H. C. Dixon) that there could be a major hunger problem in Samoa within 10 years. There were difficulties, Mata’afa said, such as diseases which were affecting banana and copra production and the drop in cocoa and copra prices. But steps were being taken to remedy these problems. An Australian plant diseases specialist had recently investigated the bunch-top disease that was killing the banana palms and would be reporting shortly on what precautions should be taken.
