CLIMBING DEATHS
(N.Z. Press. Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, October 2. More than 200 people were killed in. climbing accidents in the apline ranges of France, Italy and Switzerland this summer. Of these, 64 occurred in the French Alps (42 in the Mont Blanc range), 49 in Italy and 89 in the Swiss Alps. The figure was high because of the particularly dangerous conditions in the regions this summer. About 65 per cent of the deaths could be atttributed to the poor condition of the mountains and freakish variation in the weather. . The other 35 per cent could be ascribed to lack of training, want of experience, ignorance of the alpine condition, faulty climbing equipment and imprudence.
