100-MILE MARCH

Forty-one men of the First Battalion Depot, Burnham Military Camp, will begin a 100-mile march on Monday. They will leave from Price’s Valley at 6 a.m. and head for Akaroa along the provincial State highway. If all goes well the march should be completed by 6 a.m. on Saturday. The march is part of the standard third-star test for infantrymen. They have five days to complete the exercise, including the digging of a slit-trench at the end of the march.

Although this is the first

time such a training march by the battalion has been attempted at Burnham Military Camp, a similar 100-mile march was successfully completed at Waiouru recently. The route will be from Price's Valley to Akaroa. up to the Summit road, over to Diamond Harbour, and around the Lyttelton Harbour bays to Godley Head.

The men will carry their own food, sleeping needs, spare clothing, and digging equipment. Drinking water will be supplied by the Army because of the danger of 1080poisoning from stream water.
