Hospital Boiler-house Contract To Be Let

Contracts to a total value of £218,525 are to be let for the new Christchurch Hospital boiler-house. The contract completion time is 16 months. The total cost of the boilerhouse, including boilers, gritarrestors, and smoke-handling equipment, will be more than £300,000. The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) yesterday authorised the North Canterbury Hospital Board to accept the tender of the Wilkins and Davies Construction Company, Ltd., for the main boilerhouse contract the construction of the boilerhouse itself and the associated maintenance workshops and chimney all being in one building. The value of this contract was £140,904. Six tenders were received for the job, Wilkins and Davies’s being the lowest.

The same firm won the contracts for the electrical services and for the installation of the new boilers and associated mechanical services. The contract for coal-hand-ling plant was won by Andersons, Ltd. The three boilers and the grit-arresting equipment have been in store for some time awaiting the construction of the building. The boilers cost a total of £60,794 and the grit - arresting equipment £6336. Negotiations concerning the ash-handling plant are still proceeding, but this is not expected to hold up work on the general project as the plant does not have to go in until a late stage of the building. The cost of the ashhandling plant is expected to exceed £20,000.
