MEAT BILL CHANGED
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. The Parliamentary lands and agriculture committee has amended the Meat Bill to make it clear that the “open door’’ policy under which freezing works are required, if asked, to kill and ship meat on the owner’s account will apply only to carcase meat, not to edible offal. As originally drafted, the provisions covered edible offal as well as carcases. The only other major change in the bill, reported back to Parliament yesterday, is reinsertion of a clause in existing legislation, but omitted from the bill, freeing local bodies from loan poll requirements when borrowing money for abattoir work. The committee has raised the maximum fine from £lOO. to £5OO for freezing works' failure to produce accounts and information when required for investigation by the Minister of Agriculture.
