RETURN OF RATES
Kindergartens Can Negotiate (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Oct 1. Local bodies had the right to charge kindergartens water and sewerage rates, but these rates could be remitted, the president of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union. Mrs Helen Downor. told delegates at the union’s Dominion conference in Dunedin today. The conference, attended by more than 140 delegates, concluded with remaining remits and the annual meeting this afternoon. Discussing a Lower Hutt remit which asked that kindergartens be exempt from such levies, delegates reported on the stand taken by local bodies in their own areas. Anomalies were due to “the disposition of the local body.” Mrs Downor said, “at present, each kindergarten must pursue this issue with the municipal authority in its area.”
