Breakfast Message From Queen Salote
“The 10th Pan Pacific and South-east Asia Women’s Association conference in Tonga was the best of all conferences,” Mrs M. Scott said in her report to the Christchurch group last evening. A remarkable experience for all was being billeted in the homes of Tongan people. “Women always like to see how other women run their homes,” she said. Mrs- D. B. Weststrate, in her report told of the preparations in Tonga before the conference. “The Queen told her people their houses would have to be up to European standards. They were painted, and flush toilets and bathrooms installed. Then the Queen inspected these houses. The ones which were not up to standard she broadcast that evening,” said Mrs Weststrate. “The Queen took a personal interest in our welfare. She even broadcast what we should have for breakfast.” Mrs K. McCreanor said Tonga was education conscious and was trying to educate its people to take over their country. She spoke about the education and health systems of the islands.
Mrs A. Kennedy White spoke on the cultural heritage of New Zealand. A bracket of songs was sung by Mrs Helen Bennington accompanied by Mrs W. E. Olds.
