Wrapping To Cost The Grocer More

Wrapping is to cost the grocer more with a rise in price of wrapping paper of 2d per lb or £lB 13s 4d a ton. This is a cost that will have to be carried by the grocer himself.
This is among the latest of price rises that have followed the recent 6 per cent general wage increase. Other lines that are now dearer are biscuits, confectionery, breakfast foods, brushware and baking commodities. There are still long delays in deliveries between Lyttelton and Christchurch. Many distributors are anxiously waiting for imported lines to arrive. Among lines held up are
canned pineapple, rice, dried fruit and fish. N.Z. Canned Fish.— An Auckland packer several months ago issued a comprehensive list of fish being canned in the district. The packs were most attractive and a good choice was offered. Tuna has been added to the range and will be available in a half-pound tin. Stocks are available and should retail about 3s 3d a can. Tomatoes.—A large canner has exhausted its stocks of wholepeeled tomatoes in the 15, 20 and 28 ounce cans, distributors have been told. However, the canner holds quantities of 20 ounce stewed tomatoes at the same price as the 20 ounce whole-peeled, retailing at 2s 7d a can. American Rice. Quotations are now out for new season’s American rice and show a slight increase. Orders, are being accepted. A ship will be leaving ■New Orleans about October 20. Long grain rice has been growing in popularity on the New Zealand market, perhaps at the expense of Australian short grain rice. Breakfast Cereals Prices Up.— As from the beginning of October, “Weetbix” and “Granose” will sell at a higher price. In future the 12 ounce sizes will sell for Is 6d and 24 ounce sizes at 2s id, an increase of Id and 2d respectively. Vegetable Salad.—A new line just released under the “Pixie” brand is a vegetable salad packed In a 14i ounce can. The salad comprises green beans, diced carrots, whole sweet corn, garden peas, diced potatoes and mayonnaise. Vegetable salads are popular in both America and the Continent, and this recipe is similar to imported brands. The salad may sell for about 3s 9d and should prove popular during the warmer weather. Business Personals Mr I. D. Reid, of Wellingtoii, a director of Felt and Textiles of New Zealand, Ltd. since 1957, has been appointed chairman of directors in place of Mr H. R. Chalmers who. has retired. -
