LAND SPEED RECORD
Green Fails In Attempt (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS (Utah), October 1. An attempt to break the world land speed record for pure-jet cars fell far short of the mark on the Bonneville Salt Flats yesterday. An Illinois racing driver, T. Green, clocked 279.26 miles an hour on the faster of his two runs in his “Wingfoot Express.” Green is trying to beat the record of 407.45 miles an hour set here last year by Craig Breedlove, of California, in his jet-powered “Spirit of America” machine. Green was clocked at 193.78 miles an hour in his other run yesterday. His cigar-shaped car, with a J-46 jet engine, skims along with its body only three inches off the ground. Green used the same engine yesterday with which he recorded a top speed of 282 miles an hour In a trial run on Tuesday. After yesterday's relatively slow times, Green said he planned to instal a new engine for his next attempt at the record.
Hols-ln-One.—Mrs B. Cusack, of the Walmairi Beach club, holed In one during the Avondale Golf Club’s visitors' day. She scored her ace, on the 173 yards fifteenth hole, using a No. 3 Wood.
