1970 EMPIRE GAMES
Pressing Claim At Tokyo (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Oct. 1. Behind the scenes at next month’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Edinburgh’s case for holding the 1970 British Empire and Commonwealth Games will be pressed with vigour, says the “Scotsman.” The Commonwealth countries will be represented in Tokyo and they will meet to consider the 1966 Games to be held in Kingston, Jamaica. At the same time Edinburgh’s sports ambassadors, Messrs P. Heatly and W. Carmichael, will reiterate the Scottish capital’s desire to sponsor the 1970 games. (Two New Zealand cities, Christchurch and Auckland, are interested in holding the 1970 games and have formed organisations to promote their attempt). The most important requirement for the holding of the games is a 55-yard pool and Edinburgh seems no nearer to finding a site for the pool than when the idea to stage the Commonwealth games was first mooted.
