GAMES HORSE DESTROYED
Went Berserk On Plane (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Oct. 1. Markham, a veteran jumper of the United States three-day equestrian team, was destroyed yesterday on a plane in which he and 10 other team horses were en route to the Olympic Games at Tokyo, United Press International reported. The 11-year-old brown gelding which finished fifteenth in the Rome Olympics, went beserk shortly after the chartered plane left Newark, New Jersey. So violent was the outburst by the frantic animal that seven men, all attached to the team, were unable to calm him.
Finally, the team veterinarian, Dr. Joseph Odea, was forced to destroy the horse humanely with an injection when the safety of the plane and its occupants became threatened.
