BIG RISE IN EXPORTS
Manufactured Goods Exports of New Zealand manufactured goods rose from £7,952,603 in 1959 to £12,327,943 in the year which concluded at June 30. Mr Alston is to leave in a fortnight's time as secretary of the Government sponsored trade mission to Southeast Asia. He quoted figures to indicate some of the significant increases in exports over the last five years. These included, 1959 figures being given in parenthesis, biscuits £47,798 (£19,738); canned and frozen vegetables £732,526 (£399,600); tobacco manufacturers, £109,903 (£60,749); medicinal and pharmaceutical products, £163,579 (£44,351); newsprint, £5,758,950 (£2,716,489); textile products other than clothing, £280,160 (£12,051); metal manufacturers, £121,585 (£38,158); dairy machinery, £180,559 (£89,095); furniture and fixtures, £26,453 (£10,884); and clothing, £137,709 (£21,922).
