NEW POSTAL RATES
Rush Before Introduction An extra 40,000 articles of first-class and second-class mail were posted in Christchurch on Wednesday, the day before postage rates went up. The Post Office had to call extra staff to handle the deluge, which saved the senders at least £lOO in pennies and half-pennies. Now that surface letters cost 4d and air-mail letters sd, the demand for penny stamps has increased enormously. There was such a run on them in the first hour of business yesterday that the Central Post Office had to rush more up from its bulk supply. To allow everyone time to get used to the new rates, the Post Office is allowing a short period of grace before it starts charging the doubledeficiency penalty for understamped mail. Mail posted yesterday at the old rates will not be penalised.
