HUNGER IN SAMOA
Big Problem Predicted (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. Unless preventive measures were taken immediately there could be a major hunger problem in Samoa within 10 years, C.0.R.5.0.’s national secretary (the Rev. H. C. Dixon) said today. “Their agriculture, on which they depend, is in a bad way,” Mr Dixon said. “Bananas have developed a disease and the bottom has fallen out of the market for cocoa. Rhinoceros beetle is causing havoc. “Lack of shipping and markets, lack of money and technical training personnel are inhibiting all efforts to diversify their crops and expand their agriculture. “All experts agree that within 10 years there will be an acute hunger problem in Samoa if preventive action is not taken now.”
A recent grant by New Zealand’s Freedom from Hunger Campaign committee give £BO,OOO for an agricultural college near Apia, in Western Samoa, to serve the whole Pacific region. The college would be financed by New Zealand through C.0.R.5.0. for the campaign fund and £20,000 had gone to the scheme already. The college would be .ready for opening about the middle of next year.
