Doctors’ Fees

Sir,—lt is abundantly clear that a certain type of the New Zealand public wants and is getting an extremely cheap medical service from general practitioners, compared to, say, Australia, Europe, and America. However, a small number of doctors here do not approve of the type of medicine practised, whereby for economic reasons, a large number of patients must be rushed through daily, in order to keep the fee low. They feel that a better type of medicine can be practised by-see-ing fewer patients, spending more time with each patient, and charging a higher fee, this being the type of medicine practised by specialists. Most sensible people agree the latter method is to be encouraged.—Yours, etc., OBSERVANT. October 1, 1964.
