Pay Increases For House Surgeons

WELLINGTON, Sept 29. Higher salaries for junior and senior house surgeons were announced today by the Minister of Health (Mr McKay). Junior house surgeons now receiving £B5O will be paid £lO5O a year, retrospective to April 1 and £l3OO from January 1 next. Senior house surgeons receiving £1055 at present will be paid £l2OO a year from April 1 last and £l4OO from January 1. Residential accommodation, board and lodging and related services provided at present in addition to normal salary will continue on this basis till December 31 this year. After that date they will be charged at the same rates as for other medical staff. House surgeons could be assured their claims had been (fully considered and the new 'scales approved by the CabI inet represented a material
improvement in their conditions of employment, said Mr McKay.
