Two-Year-Olds Put Through Paces

Several local two-year-olds were put through their paces in a series of heats from the starting stalls at Riccarton yesterday. The youngsters were tried for speed over a distance of about two and a half furlongs on the trial grass.

The first heat resulted in a comfortable all-the-way victory for El Beka, one of the Riccarton entrants for the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham this month. Mr T. J. Spang’s Red Mars colt bounded clear of his seven rivals as soon as the gates opened and kept beyond challenging distance in the run to the finish.

El Beka ended the gallop with three lengths on Danny Kaye (C. T. Wilson) which had led the chase all the way. Pattie Burford (E. G. Low) was third in a similar gap and Astronomy (S. Brunning) led in the others but was a fair way back. The apprentice, R. Penrose, was lucky to escape with a shaking when he fell from his mount, a filly by Red Mars from Cloudy, about a furlong from the finish. The girth had apparently slackened and the filly galloped to the crossing with the saddle under her belly. El Beka, which was successful in the colts and geldings’ section of the two-year-old parade at the Grand National meeting, is a member of A. J. Williams’ team. In yesterday’s trial this well-forward youngster was ridden by the stable apprentice P. J. Daly. Danny Kaye, an attractive colt by Copenhagen 11, seems to have improved since he finished third in the two-year-old parade at Ashburton last month. He is prepared for Mr D. Leslie by G. S. Barr. Pattie Burford, which is trained by R. P. Register and will race for his wife, is a High Rank filly and Astronomy is Mr F. A. Nelson’s Red Mars filly. She is trained by her owner. Good Finish

The second heat provided the best finish of all when four of the six starters crossed the line almost as one. Natter (A. J. Stokes), Malecite (A. H. Eastwood) and Tixall (W. Martin) disputed the pace but Quick Flight (A. Swanson) gathered them in right on the line.

Natter, which won the fillies’ section of the two-year-

old parade at the Grand National meeting then was narrowly beaten by Kimono in the McLean Stakes at Wingatui at her first race attempt,

is another local entry for the Wellesley Stakes.

The others involved in yesterday’s four-sided finish with Mr and Mrs J. F. Tutton’s The Cobbler filly are all unraced. Malecite, which will race for her breeder and trainer, V. D. Clutterbuck, is a Dogger Bank filly and Tixall, which is trained by J. E. Shaw for Mr G. R. Macdonald, is a filly by Sabaean. Quick Flight, which is trained by G. S. Barr for Mr B. F. Mears, of Ashburton, is a gelding by Magic Carpet. Sandbank, another member of J. E. Shaw’s team, led all the way to win the third heat This Dogger Bank gelding, which was ridden by A. Swanson, will race for Mr R. G. Gerard.

Sandbank finished clear of his three rivals. They were White Rajah (B. Campbell), an unnamed Summertime gelding (C. T. Wilson) and Delago (E. G. Low). White Rajah, a gelding by Rawalpindi, and Delago, a colt by Hidalgo, are both trained for Mr W. H. Williamson by J. R. Shaw. They have been nominated for the Nursery Handicap at the Masterton meeting on October 10 and also for the Wellesley Stakes, to be run the following Saturday. The Summertime youngster may do no racing at all in New Zealand. He was purchased at the national sales for 1800 guineas by his Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw, but will do his racing for Mr B. G. Thomas, of Hobart.

Whisk Broom (A. Telfer) and an unnamed Copenhagen II gelding (D. N. Hadfield) were abreast half a length ahead of JacCor (B. D. Collins) at the finish of the fourth heat. The other runner, Amicable, bucked as he left the stalls and bumped his rider, I. Rogers, to the ground. The unnamed Copenhagen gelding will do his racing for his trainer, J. L. Barr. The other three are all members of W. A. Welton’s team. Whisk Broom, a Magic Carpet filly, is owned by Miss J. Grigg. Jacdor will race for Messrs J. Boyd-Clark and C. J. Ferrier and Amicable is owned by Mrs J. W. Woodhouse. Both of these youngsters are sons of My Pal.
