Mail Rates Increased From Today

Increased mail charges announced recently come into effect today. The increase in letter rate, fragile fees and express transit fees is the first since January, 1953, and for business reply cards, wrappers and envelopes the first since 1931. The late fee increase for letters and post cards is the first since 1939. No alterations have been made to the rates for overseas parcels, either by surface mail or by air, but there are many other increases. The deputy Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) said yesterday that overseas surface mail increases were being made to bring them into line with recent inland mail charge changes. AIRMAIL LETTERS Airmail letters to Britain go up by 3d to 2s each Joz, postcards from Is to Is Id and aerograms by Id to 9d. Second-class mall remains the same at 9d each Joz. Among other airmail increases are:— Australia: Letters, 7d (old rate 6d): postcards, 4d (3d); aerograms, 6d, (unchanged); second-class, 3d (unchanged). Fiji: Letters. 7d (6d): postcards, 4d (3d): areograms, 5d (4d): second-class, 4d (3d.). Cook Islands: Letters, 7d (6d); postcards, 4d (3d): aerograms, 5d (4d); second-class, 4d (3d). French Polynesia: Letters, lOd (9d>; postcards, 6d (sd); aerograms, 7d (6d); second-class, 4d (unchanged). Malaysia: Letters, Is (unchanged) r postcards, 7d. (6d): aerograms, Sd (unchanged); second-class, 6d (unchanged). Forces Mail: Letters, fid (unchanged); aerograms, 4d (3d). Japan; Letters. Is 9d; postcards, Is; aerograms, Sd; sec-ond-class, Sd (all unchanged). United States: Letters, Is fid (unchanged); postcards, lOd (9d); aerograms, Sd (unchanged); second-class, 7d (unchanged). Cyprus: Letters, 2s (Is 9d); postcards. Is Id (Is); aerograms, 9d (8d); second-class, 9d (unchanged). Surface mail rates for letters to Britain rise by Id to 4d for the first loz. This corrects an anomaly whereby it cost 4d to post a letter from Auckland to Wellington but only 3d from Auckland to London.
