Hayes, the international civil aviation adviser to Nepal, yesterday approved the site for a landing strip for Sir Edmund Hillary’s schoolhouse expedition in the Solo Khumbu area near Mount Everest. The strip, 8920 ft above sea level, will be built within 50 days by more than 100 labourers working with hand tools. Mr Hayes flew to the site with an expedition member, Peter Mulgrew, and they were joined by other members from base camp. The expedition will also build three village schools and climb the 21,730 ft Tamserku peak, near Everest.
