RIPE FRUIT SALVAGED
Charity Cargo Stranded One hundred cases of ripe grapefruit and lemons were salvaged by the Christchurch Lions Club from a 300-case cargo of over-ripe fruit after a shipment to Christchurch had been stranded 10 days on a sand-bar. For the last four years the Whakatane Lions Club has sent a shipment for the Christchurch club to distribute to charitable homes. This year the m.v. Poranui was stranded on the Ohopi sand-bar at Whakatane. The ship arrived at Lyttelton a fortnight late. Fourteen members of the Lions Club spent nearly four hours at the store of C. E. Gwatkin, Ltd., sorting the fruit last evening. The equivalent of 200 cases had to be scrapped. The good fruit will be distributed to as many homes as possible today.
Mr D. Chapman said there were no whole cases, but some were completely rotten. All the loading, cleaning, and packing had to be done last evening.
