Nominations For Seats Filling

LONDON, September 30.

A total of 99 Candidates has been nominated so far for seats in the next British Parliament. Nominations for the October 15 General Election will close on Monday.

In last night’s total were 43 Conservatives, 36 Labour candidates and 12 Liberal. There are 630 constituencies. Among the newcomers, and probably the youngest candidate, is a 21-year-old mother, Mrs Margaret Tucker, of Cardiff, who wants Welsh self-government. She is challenging the retiring Labour member for

Ogmore, Glamorgan, Mr Walter Padley. There is a frogman who, at 48, has no previous active experience at politics; and a man who says he wants only Six months in Parliament to curb wildcat strikes. The former is Mr Ronald Robinson who, as an independent, is challenging Mr Maurice Edelman, the former Labour member for Coventry North and a novelist who makes Parliamentary life the theme of his books. The latter is Mr John S. Thbmson, an industrialist and soccer club director If elected in Greenock, he undertakes to introduce legislation for compulsory secret ballots before a strike and compulsory arbitration within a month. He offers to forfeit £lO,OOO if he fails to keep his promise to resign his seat within six months. The nominations have included both Scottish and Welsh Nationalists and a Communist. Great Yarmouth saw its first Liberal nomination since 1950.
