‘No Alteration’
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, September 30. China’s possession of a nuclear weapon would not alter the military situation in South-east Asia, the Minister for External Affairs, Mr Paul Hasluck, said in the House of Representatives today. He said he believed that any nuclear weapon China might have was “still a good way behind those possessed by the other two great nuclear powers.” Mr Hasluck was answering Mr H. Bate (Liberal) who had asked him to comment on a
statement by the U.S. Secretary of State, Mr Dean Rusk, that China now had a nuclear weapon. “For some time China has been developing towards a nuclear weapon, at first with Russian aid, and then later on its own,” Mr Hasluck said. “However possession of a nuclear weapon by China would not alter the situation in South-east Asia. It would only add to the military power of China.”
