New Eastern Extension
Shipping companies would have to be advised that fresh water would not be available at the new wharves when they came into use, the secretary-manager (Mr A. J. Sowden) told the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. There have been long negotiations between the board and the Lyttelton Borough Council over the supply of water to the eastern extension.
The latest development was that the solicitors had served a notice of arbitration on the Borough Council and suggested that there be one arbitrator. “There is a stalemate, and the solicitors have been up against a brick wall,” Mr F. W. Freeman commented. The chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane): It is an extraordinary state of affairs.
