FOSSIL IN QUARRY
Find Near Whangarei
(N.Z. Press Association)
WHANGAREI, Sept. 29.
What could be the fossilised remains of a prehistoric mammal or large bird have been found in Wilson’s (New Zealand) Cement, Ltd. limerock quarry at Waro, near Whangarei.
They were found in a large boulder which was blasted out of the quarry face last week. The most pronounced structure appears to be rib bones which are curved and about 2ft 6in long. Other bone structures, including what appear to be knuckles, can be seen. The quarry manager (Mr A. W. Buchanan) says that some of more obvious remains disintegrated while he and his staff were splitting the rock to make it easier to handle. Years ago a large bone was unearthed in the same quarry.
Mr Buchanan has advised the Auckland Museum of the present discovery and it is expected a museum staff scientist will visit the site this week.
