TRIBUTE TO MR C. H. BETHELL
Executive Of Wool Research Body Meeting at Lincoln this week the executive of the Wool Research Organisation received with regret the resignation of Mr C. H. Bethell, of Waikari, who has been a representative of the Wool Board on the executive and chairman of the executive since its inception in January, 1961. Dr. I. K. Walker, deputychairman of the executive, paid a warm tribute to Mr Bethell's work for the organisation. It was largely because of his energetic and decisive leadership that the organisation had developed so far and so soundly in so short a time, he said. Events during Mr Bethell’s chairmanship had set the pattern for some years to come, said Dr. Walker. A director had been appointed, a fellowship scheme for recruiting high-calibre graduates had been launched, the laboratory buildings had been designed and construction started, and the initial fields of research had been selected. Mr Bethell left the organisation in a sound position to face the future with plans made for scientific research programmes and a balanced budget
The executive met at Lincoln on Monday and Tuesday instead of in Wellington, as is usual, so that its members could inspect progress on the construction of the organisation’s laboratories, and to hear accounts from Lincoln College staff, and from the organisation’s New Zealand-based staff, of research carried out with funds provided by the organisation.
