MEETING IN OCTOBER

Manufacturing Conference The biggest manufacturing conference to be held in the South Island would be opened in Christchurch on October 7 by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall), said the secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr H. T. Alston). The annual conference of the New Zealand Manufactures’ Federation, he said, would be attended by more than 120 persons, including delegates and wives and about 50 Canterbury association members. There would be seven trade groups meeting in the one week. Two Christchurch members were preparing papers for the conference, he said. The immediate past president (Mr R. H. Stewart) would present a paper on “Retail Price Maintenance,” and Mr J. K. Dobson a paper on “Immigration.” He said that among subjects to be discussed by the federation’s conference were climate and policies for industrial growth and aspects of economic planning, New Zealand-Australia free trade, export trade and immigration.

Members of the trade groups, he said, would visit many Christchurch factories.
