Camellias Outstanding At Spring Flower Show

A magnificent 35ft display of camellias entered by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Camellia Society, was a major attraction at the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s Daffodil Show, yesterday. The display, which included several new varieties shown for the first time, was awarded the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture cup for outstanding cultivation.

Recently imported from Holland as bulbs, and grown by E. W, Cotter, two hibiscus daffodils made their show debut. They are Flaneur,, a plain yellow strain, and Baccarat, a larger double flower of two shades of yellow.

The camellia section was outstanding, said a judge of the cut flower section, Mr J. O. Taylor. One of the best was a camellia reticulata, Captain Rawes, shown by Mrs R. J. Moriarty. The exhibit of polyanthus was exceptionally good. Those shown by Mrs R. Donovan showed a very high standard of cultivation and the florets with diameters of two inches and a half were some of the biggest he had seen, said Mr Taylor. Recognised as among the most regal of flowers is the Amaryllis. A display by Mr L. E. Rendall was surrounded by admirers most of the day. The blooms are from Dutch hybrids imported from Holland some time ago. Included were clean velvety reds, oranges, and suffused pinks. The judge of the single bloom and seedling sections, Mr O. W. B. Anderson, of Napier, who is both vicepresident of the National Daffodil Society and of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, said his belief that New Zealand-grown seedlings were as good if not better than overseas seedlings was borne out by the quality on display. Star thistle might be termed a noxious weed but its decorative looking leaves helped the Papanui Garden Club to carry off first prize in the class for a spring arrangement using driftwood. Entries totalled 1308, slightly fewer than last year, but the quality of the blooms was higher, said the secretary, Mr J. C. Fraser. The daffodil section drew the largest number of entries—--758. Trophies winners were:— L. J. Chambers trophy, D. S. McLenagham; S. W. Gower trophy, A. W. Chappell; T. Sheriff trophy, E. W. Cotter; Alf Clark trophy, G. A. Challies; St. Giles Borgfeldt trophy, E.
