ELKAYEL, SYBEAU
Bold-Gallop Finish "The Press" Special Service MATAMATA, Sept. 29. The Melbourne Cup hopes, Sybeau and Elkayel came through a real old-fashioned cup gallop with flying colours at Te Aroha today. After the barrier trials Elkayel (Hughes) and Sybeau (Grylls) went two miles, the first mile and a half at threequarter pace and the last halfmile in 49 l-ssec, a bold gallop. They finished very strongly and Sybeau, on the inner, was a neck in front after the last three furlongs in 36 3-ssec. They look in capital condition before their flight on Monday and Sybeau should more than pay his way in the lesser races leading up to the Cup. He is very forward. Showed Fitness Red Count (Jury) showed his fitness for early racing when he finished ahead of Kumlucky (Nuttall) with a length to Water Waggon (McLiesh) and another length to Impressario (Colven) over half a mile in 48 3-ssec. Red Count looked the most forward of them. Kumlucky got all the worst of the start and made up a lot of ground. Water Waggon showed speed to the last half furlong and then blew out. He has not grown much but has thickened out a fair amount. Led To Post Yani (Edge) finished brilliantly to win a half-mile gallop in 48 2-ssec. Yani had the outside running and led Quien Sabe (McLiesh) and Odeon (N. Riordan) at the post. She is very forward. Odeon was eased the last bit but is making good progress. Arbroath (J. Riordan) and Super John (Humphries) ran half a mile in 49 l-ssec, the last three furlongs strongly in 36 2-ssec. Arbroath has furnished into a very attractive type of three-year-old.
