N.Z. Party's Fears Of Tasman Trade

(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright)

SYDNEY, September 29. Members of the New Zealand Government, mayors, industrialists and representatives of commerce reached Sydney today to inspect the British Exhibition. A fear a number of them expressed was free trade between Australia and New Zealand.

The Mayor of Auckland, Mr D. M. Robinson, a former manufacturer, said: “Most New Zealand manufacturers would be apprenhensive about free trade between Australia and New Zealand. Their biggest fear would be of dumping.”

The Minister of Customs and associate Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Shelton, said: “I’m in favour

of it, so long as it doesn’t harm us. “It would be good so long as it didn’t adversely affect us, as we have anti-dumping laws which would protect New Zealand manufacturers. The party, which will inspect Sydney stores participating in “British Fortnight,” and the “New Zealand Day” at the British Exhibition, tomorrow, will return home on Thursday. Their visit has been financed by the British Government and Federation of British Industries. The British High Commissioner in New Zealand, Sir lan Maclennan, is accompanying the party, which includes the Secretary of Industries and Commerce, Dr. W. B. Sutch, and the Mayors of Auckland, Dunedin and Christchurch, the Mayor of Wellington, Mr F. J. Kitts, will arrive later.
