FORESTRY SCHEME
Disappointing Results (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 29. The Farm Forestry Association would make suggestions on how the farm forestry scheme might be adjusted to encourage more farmers to adopt it, the Minister of Forests (Mr Gerard) told Parliament tonight. He was replying to an inquiry about the prospects of the scheme from Sir Eruera Tirikatene (Opp., Southern Maori) during the debate on the Estimates for the Forest Service and forest development. “1 am sorry to say we are not getting the results we hoped for,” said Mr Gerard. “If it is necessary to alter the arrangements we will look at it,” he said. Sir Euera Tirikatene: There seems to be a need for special care about fire at the Eyrewell forest where there was an extensive windthrow. If there was a fire there, all would be lost.
Mr Gerard: We are very worried about the fire risk. Fire-fighting equipment is being set up and we are building a steel watch-tower to give a vider coverage.
