Children’s Books Arrive At Sizane
Children's books sent to a small school in Sizane, Southern Rhodesia, by the National Council of Women of New Zealand have arrived.
“The response (to an appeal) has far surpassed my dreams and the N.C.W. of New Zealand has been simply wonderful,” said Miss Marjorie Sanders, . education adviser in the area, in a letter to the Dominion president of the N.C.W. (Mrs W. Grant). Miss Sanders said she had replied to all senders of books who had put an address on their book parcels, but many had arrived without any identification. “N.Z. Very Real” “Many people even went to the trouble of buying new books to send and others put in little notes of good wishes. It all made New Zealand so real and was yet another indication of the ready friendliness of the N.C.W.,” Miss Sanders said. Describing the growth of the school, Miss Sanders said 20 of the pupils recently sat for the junior certificate examination, which would entitle them to go on to further training. The school, held in four classrooms lent by the Baptist Church in Sizane, had a roll of 60, a waiting list of 250,
and a desperate shortage of books, when the appeal was launched by the N.C.W. last April.
Pupils Keen “One of the things of which we are most proud js that in spite of all the troubles in the African townships, boycotting of schools, bombing of homes, stoning of buildings and similar attacks by intimidators, the boys and girls of Sizane have not missed one day at school,” said Miss Sanders.
