TESTING OF TECHNIQUES

Army Exercise Begins An exercise designed to assist in the problem of noxious animal control, and to test training techniques, will be carried out by the regular force, element of 1 Reconnaissance Squadron (New Zealand Scottish Regiment) before they leave for Britain on “Exercise Powderhorn.” . The troop, left Christchurch on Monday afternoon to conduct various types of reconnaissance over a route from Amberley to Murchison. In the latter area it will mount a small offensive against the “enemy” (deer) and then go to Picton on further reconnaissance missions. Experiments in personal flotation drills will be carried out by the troop at Picton. The soldiers will also look for a possible sea landing site for a large force. The return journey will be one of reconnoitring the best possible places where an enemy might disrupt supply communications between Cheviot . and Kaikoura. Having found these they will supply the necessary information that would enable the chosen positions to be defended.

The aim of the exercise, which ends oh Thursday, is to perfect drills which will later be taught to territorial members Of the unit.
