DAVIS CUP TO AUST. Emerson Wins, Says “I’ll Be Back”

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CLEVELAND, September 29. The Wimbledon champion, R. Emerson, said yesterday that “at the present stage” he planned to be available for the Australian team when it defends the Davis Cup in 1965, Associated Press reported.

Emerson said this after he had beaten C. R. McKinley (United States) in the final match of the challenge round at Cleveland yesterday. _ His victory took the Davis Cup back to Australia after a year’s stay in the United States. Australia won the tie. 3-2. Emerson added that he

“would have to listen to any professional offers first, but as far as I know now I’ll be back next year.” Overcame Bad Start A crowd of 6500 at the court in Cleveland Heights saw Emerson overcome a bad start against the irrepressible McKinley and then sweep through the next three sets. Emerson’s victory followed a courageous win by F. Stolle, of Australia, over R. D. Ralston, in five hardfought sets on Sunday which had brought the match level, at 2-2, and revived Australia’s sagging cup hopes. The Wimbledon champion was struggling at the start of his match and dropped his service in the seventh and ninth games to lose the first set, 3-6. After that he was always a little better than the bustling McKinley. The American, although outplayed, never gave up. He brought off retrieving shots which few other players would ever have attempted. Against Emerson even McKinley’s best was not good enough and although the Australian was in trouble with his serve in the fourth and eighth games of the final set, he was always able to pull out the shots on crucial points.
