PROPOSAL FOR PARK

Cashmere Rd. Property

The Heathcote County Council was last evening asked to contribute £6OOO towards the cost of buying the H. A. Young estate in Cashmere road as a park and children’s playground. A deputation representing a committee of residents in the area told the council that an option for the property for £12,000 had been obtained. The committee would aim to raise the remaining £6OOO. Mr H. N. Pyne, who led the deputation, said there was no playground for children in the area. The property could meet this need as well as providing a small botanic garden and reserve. “We visualise that such a park would be used extensively by the general public and particularly by Karitane nurses with their young charges,” he said. Once the area was acquired, the committee visualised gifts being received from publicspirited citizens to improve the area. “We consider it would be nothing short of a tragedy if the opportunity now offering was not taken,” said Mr Pyne. Mr N. E. Kirk, M.P. for Lyttelton, had pledged his support for the project

Other members of the deputation were Mrs J. Matson, and Messrs H. Cordery, H. Smart and J. Ferguson. The request was referred to the town planning committee.
